Color is so important in setting the mood of any room or art piece. How and why do we select the colors that we use?
As you know, I like my designs to create a harmony between man and nature. In nature, while you do find bold bright colors, it is the more "natural" colors that help bring that sense of organic into the space or art piece. Even from a sense of dyes and pigments - many times the more natural ones are toned down and less vibrant than synthetics, simply as a characteristic of their makeup. I appreciate spaces that are bold and bright - it is just not my go to "cup of tea."
So how do you go about picking the colors for your space? First off, you do need to pick colors that you are attracted to. Colors have powerful influence on our moods and that is important to recognize. Colors also do tend to go in trends. Be mindful of this when picking a trendy color. Make sure that the colors you pick are going to create that sense of mood in the space that you are looking for.
The use of the vibrant pink and the dark green in this kitchen is a beautiful example of two colors working together in harmony to create a space that is both relaxing and energetic at the same time. I want to have my coffee in this kitchen in the morning - and ohhhh - would I tear into that lovely cake sitting on the counter... When taking a look at this space, I immediately draw assumptions about the owner of this space. I picture someone with a lively personality - a laugh that is infectious. I picture someone that loves to bake and entertain, but also loves to sit quietly with a book and a cup of tea. Just like that cake on the counter - this room shows off the beauty of naturalness and the icing of color.
This living space uses color to set a very distinctive mood as well. Here, the very light and dark neutral colors set a stage of formality. This space feels formal and you realize immediately that each piece in this room is a piece of art. The white walls create a blank canvas to highlight each piece that is in the room. The elaborately curved sofa would easily overtake the balance of the room if it was not in white. In white, it is just subtle enough to perfectly compliment the space. If the draperies were not in the dark tones - the two chairs would stand out too much. Almost all of the tones in this room are on the cooler side, but the designer chose a very warm tone for the side table between the two chairs and then repeated a similar warm tone on the two art frames on the wall. These little touches really help this space have a sense of cohesion and balance.
My go-to for bathrooms is white - I love how white brings in this instant sense of cleanliness. However, this mostly black bathroom is a stunning use of black. It still has a sense of cleanliness with the white sink and the tub insert, but it is moody and seductive without being vulgar. Any person's skin tone is going to look spectacular in this bathroom.
Oh white. I do love white. There are so many shades of white, used together you can create
a space that feels so clean and bright while still feeling warm. Trying to match all of your whites perfectly is going to leave your space feeling flat and it's not going to work perfectly anyway so you are still going to have different shades. Just embrace white's versatility and use it to create layers. I love how this designer paired whites with the delicious velvet ochre pillow on the bed and the mud-cloth throw, together with the tribal patterned barely gray comforter to create a space that feels warm and natural while also feeling very traditionally luxurious.
Choose your colors wisely!
