Design Exercise - River Cabin on Stilts

This dark, outdated cabin gets a complete modern makeover.

The exterior is taken from drab to modern with the use of vertical wood siding in 2x2 strips that extend over the roofing to highlight the volume of the building. The screened in porch has been enclosed to add more living space to the inside as well as bring the interior closer to the view. On the side the windows were covered with 2" gaps to provide a view out but increase privacy and create a clean contemporary look.

Inside the home the screened in porch drastically increased the living space and brought the space forward toward the view. The staircase railing was removed allowing the cut of the stairs to create interest. Furniture is kept clean and low but interesting to open up this still small space. Everything is kept light and neutral with clean lines, choosing to highlight the form of the space.

The kitchen area is small so I put a wall of cabinets on the back to maximize storage. The fridge and oven are both built in and hidden by the doors. I left everything in a light oak with a clear matte finish. The marble island houses the cooktop and has a lowered shelf for eating at table height. The bathroom and storage/laundry are hidden behind flushmount doors on the side.

Possibly the most challenging space in this cabin was the attic bedroom. There is not enough ceiling height to walk around the bed, so I took it and created an intentional sleeping nook as a solution.
