Found Items - Hidden Histories

Buying mass produced vs found objects

Buying a mass produced product is definitly easier than procuring a found object. However, it does not have the same level of interest to me.

Flea market, thrift shop, artisan's shop, there are so many places to find great items that are more interesting than a mass produced piece that anyone can buy online. You have to keep your mind open as you hunt for items to bring into your home. It is not as easy as having a set of items in mind and purchasing them.

Found items often have so much visual interest as a collection. Take these three handmade stone mortars. If these were matching massed produced items, they would look fine. They could even be beautiful, but these three mortars look amazing together. They have visual interest - in the shape, the colors and the wear. Each of these mortars has an unknown story and has pounded out spices for countless meals. We don't know the stories, but we know these represent more than the sum of their parts.

Let's celebrate found pieces and preserve a little bit of history.
