There are multiple reasons that people hire a professional to do their interior design. Ultimately it comes down to wanting an experienced professional to create a space that is more than what you could do on your own, either due to talent, time, resources or a combination of those.
When hiring a designer - be honest with yourself and the designer, about your intentions. Recognize why you have hired them and make that clear from the beginning. If you feel like you have the talent and the vision - but just need help with the resources and time, make sure your designer knows that before the process begins. Your designer may or may not want to just help with resources and time. If you want to work very collaboratively with the designer - that too should be made clear from before the process begins. Most designers are going to enjoy that process - but it does need to be clear and there needs to be a recognition as to who brings what to the table. Finally, if you hired a designer because you trusted their talents and want them to exercise their creativity on your space and really take it to the next level - your designer is going to love you and your spaces is going to exceed your expectations.
Make sure that you and your designer's aesthetics are in in sync. Make sure that you appreciate their point of view, if you don't agree, keep looking. If your aesthetic is shiny, glamorous and straight out of a catalogue - I am probably not the person for you. If like spaces to have a collected look and an emphasis on natural materials - let's talk!
When you are working with your designer, remember why you hired them. Remember that you hired a professional because you trusted them. You hired them so they could use their creative genius on your space. Let your designer stretch your comfort zone a bit - that's why you hired them.
