We spend a lot of money to create a interior design, and we want that style to have a timeless element to it. So, how do we create that?
There are multiple ways to create a timeless style. My most important tip is to not follow trends to strongly. We are all influenced by trends and most trends will have elements that will last for a long time so I think using the influence of trends is ok, in moderation.
One of my favorite ways to create a timeless design is to mix and match elements to create a somewhat eclectic design that is filled with pieces that are interesting. That is the key - interesting. If your design looks like it was bought straight out of a store - or looks like a showroom, chances are it isn't going to age all that well.
This living room is going to stand the test of time - each pieces is thoughtful, intentional and interesting. Pieces look collected (curated) rather than purchased as a set.
Another great way to create a timeless design is to use contrasting time periods in a thoughtful way that defies the convention. This is very successfully done throughout Europe, as Americans we are a little more hesitant to this aesthetic - though personally it is one of my favorites.
This kitchen uses very modern minimal cabinetry in a historic home. The preservation of the details on the ceiling, windows and the crown molding as well as the herringbone floors contrasts with modern elements to create a look that defies convention and manages to be both modern and historic without following the traditional style.
Following a strict design study is another way to avoid the trendy look and instead accomplish an aesthetic that clearly speaks to a lifestyle. This can be done with many different looks from very traditional to super modern.
This kitchen uses a strict minimalist approach to create a timeless look that is defined by the materials and forms rather than decoration.
Getting personal with your space is another way to create a space that will stand the test of time. It might not be for everybody but for you it will make you happy everyday. Do what makes you happy in your space. Find inspiration and use that to drive the decisions in your space. Sometimes that might be a vacation spot, a hotel, or anything that inspires you.
This bathroom uses tiles and materials that are a clear design statement and creates a shower that feels like a vacation.
Express yourself - loudly, or quietly. I think your home should reflect your personality more than a trend - and I love helping clients create homes that express that.
This dining room is an excellent example of personality being expressed in design.
We would love to help you create that timeless space for you!
